You might not know who Mace Beyers is, but some Linkin Park fans might, Mace Beyers was once part of Grey Daze, a band that Chester Bennington was part of back in the day before he entered Linkin Park. Although this isn’t directly related to Linkin Park, Mace did talk about his view on Linkin Park, changing musical style, Linkin Park’s last album A Thousand Suns and he also did talk about his relationship with Chester. Our friends at Wretches and Kings graciously shared this with us, they also conducted this interview. Hey Mace, good to see you again.
–Hey Maik, how are you ?


Fine thanks. If you are available can we start the interview ?
–No problem man, shoot me.


What are your musical influences?
–Well, let me think, Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, and old R&B, a bit of funk and jazz. Oh and The Beatles.
A lot of music, my dad owned a record store when i grew up.


What motivates you to be a musician ?
–It’s just something that i love, is something that i have to do, i have tried to quit but is impossible, just can’t it’s what i do best in my life i think.


Apart from Grey Daze, which other bands you were a part of ?
–Well, check out MySpace, there is a lot of info there: www.myspace.com/macebeyers
But if you want to know, Grey Daze, LBS, Shame, Zeros, Six Beers Deep, Jesse Evil, Drug Opera, Crushing Grapes, So…What, Woodside Quinn. I played bass in these bands except for So…What, i sang in that band. I have played over 200 dates in a year, touring the sates and some of Europe too.


How was your stay in Grey Daze ?
–Oh well, was great, i enjoyed it. Sean was a kinda weak link musically, Chester was amazing too.


How many shows you made with the band ?
–Haha i’m not sure sorry, a lot of shows.


You consider that the band projection had to be a world famous band ?
–Oh yes, we had a high hopes but only stayed on it, sad but true.


What was the biggest show Grey Daze every played ?
–There was a lot, we played at an amphitheater a can’t remember the name now. We played with Michal Shanker Group, no doubt was the best by far.


Estimated number of audience ?
–Couple of thousand.


Tell me your own Grey Daze Story, can be fun or not, is your choice:
–Ok, let me think. Well we opened up for Suicidal Once and their fans are know to sun the openers so backstage i told the band to be ready to rock your your asses off. They were just standing there, me and Chester were ripping, i was playing so much at the time where my thumb was kind of splitting like flea, well i split the calas on my thumb, started to bleed a lot all over my bass and it started to a pit, they started to pit too haha…


That hurts Mace haha…
What about a story with Chester ?
–Well, the first time i saw him play, i was the stage manager of the club, he was by the drum rise and started the song ran off the stage tall stage too because he didn’t have his glasses on and didn’t miss a beat hahahah….
I joined the band soon after that.

Mace, how born this amazing band ? What is the history of Grey Daze ?

–Chester and Sean started it and i joined after, they were kind of a cover band first. I have not much to tell about the band before i joined. When i joined the asked me if i knew any bass players after that show he fell off the stage the guitar player at the time thought i was to wild so he quit and the we put an add out and got buckeye.
The only reason Chester got in Linkin Park is i called my old lawyer to help get us a deal we played in LA (Los Angeles), they didn’t like Sean and asked Chester to join Hybrid Theory, that ship happened in life. Was hard man, let’s talk about something different.


How was your relationship with Chester Bennington ?
–Funny haha, great he was the easiest to get along with for sure.


You have contact with him now ?
–Sadly no. We had a falling out over some passes a few years ago.


What do you think about this:
You feel like being with Chester was a bad thing or a good thing for your career ?

–Ok.I don’t regret anything in my life, but i had some great shows with them, was very good for my career. Btw i’m about to record a new CD haha…


Tell me about it…

–The band is called Highway Riders. Southbound will be the record label.


How many tracks will have the album ?

–Not sure is still in pre production.


Back on topic, i’m interested on something, can we talk about Linkin Park ?
–Sure bro, no problem.


Are you auditioned for Linkin Park ? Is that true ?
–Yes.


What happened with that ?
–I think cause i didn’t relate too much with the hip hop thing, they passed on me, i played the tunes just fine, and one more thing, i think my age was a big reason also.


What do you think about Linkin Park as a band ?
–Great band, well, i really like most of it. The best is Chester. I love the Chester’s melodies. Chester loves Depeche Mode and Stone Temple Pilots, two different bands on the same person, is amazing.


What do you think about that some people said that the band become commercial…
–Music equal commercial. It has always been commercial lol…


Correct me if i wrong but Mike Shinoda said the same thing, why the people think that you are commercial when you are attempting to change your music style ?
–Chance your music style is normal, when you get older as a person and as a writer you tend to mellow out a bit, you tend to get deeper. Is just normal.


Linkin Park with Hybrid Theory was one of the best seller in the world, to me is the Best band in the World, and is the most popular band in Facebook, what do you think about that ?
–Mike and Chester are great writers, Chester is one of the best singers in the whole world.
Also the band are very smart with the business. They are good.


You heard the last Linkin Park album, A Thousand Suns ?
–First radio cuts, then the whole album.


What do you think ?
–They changed the sound a lot, is more synth than guitars.


Is a bad thing or good thing ? What do you think about this change ?
–Music is like a flavor you know if it makes me relate to it somehow emotionally, i like it, is full of great melodies baby.

–Man i have to go out now.

First of all, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and Dave ‘Phoenix’ Farrell were featured on a Japanese website (HMV Online), although the article was mostly about Linkin Park’s Meteora, there was a new picture of Mike and Phoenix and a message from both. The original article is in Japanese, which you can view HERE. Below is the translation we got from Hiro, thanks Hiro!

Mike: “When we release a new product or a new song, we hope that everybody is always excited. But I don’t know how the results will turn out. Everybody supports the new song and I want to convey my feelings of thanks into being excited like we personally are as a band. I want everybody to listen to the new songs already!”


Dave: “I’d like to thank all of our Japanese fans, I owe a deep debt of gratitude for all the support. I look forward to performing in Japan with our new work as soon as possible and as much as possible.”

Music for Relief have recently posted a blog post on their website asking for volunteers for the various festivals in Europe that Linkin Park will play in. The volunteer opportunity is only for that day when Linkin Park will be playing, volunteers will be expected to talk about MFR, distribute items, and be comfortable taking donations. According to a Mexican TV music channel, TELEHIT the BURN IT DOWN music video will premiere on May 17th. TELEHIT will be premiering it there, although surely it’ll premiere online too, perhaps via MTV like the other music videos. It should be noted this is just a RUMOR as the band hasn’t confirmed this.
