It has been announced that Sony has brought the rights to make a sequel to The Raid which is currently titled Berandal and they will start working on it this year. It is unknown who will be working on this film or whether Mike will be involved.

Since last year’s birthday project for Mike was so popular we have decided to do it again this year for Mike’s 35th birthday on February 11th. Last year’s birthday project was a success and a few lucky winners were actually able to have their submission seen by Mike Shinoda at the Los Angeles meet and greet on February 23, 2011 thanks to Kate for sending that to him! This year we’re hoping it will be another success, we’re sorry to do this on short notice, we’re also sorry that we won’t be able to spread the news on Twitter. Mike just retweeted this, Marcello from Japan Cinema had the pleasure of interviewing Mike about The Raid. Read the interview below as he talks about the film, comparison of writing a score compared to writing a studio album. He also talks about his favorite Asian films, inspirations and if he will continue writing scores in the future. Also at the end of the interview Marcello put A new Linkin Park album is being prepared for release in Summer 2012 .

Mike Shinoda is a musician best known as the rapper, principal songwriter, keyboardist, vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the rock band Linkin Park. Shinoda is also a solo rapper in his side-project, Fort Minor. What you may not know about him is he is providing the score to one of the best action films coming out of Asia in some time, The Raid (it even ranked #1 on our best films of 2011 list)! Helmed by Linkin Park frontman Mike Shinoda and film composer Joseph Trapanese, who linked up with Daft Punk to complete the music to “Tron: Legacy” last year, Shinoda is a third generation Japanese American, with a love of the arts and music. It was inevitable that he someday combine his love of the two and create an original, masterful score to a film. I had the chance to sit down and discuss the entire scoring process and what his favorite Asian films are! Read below for the full interview…

Was your mantra of ‘less is more’, zeroing in on a few things that you like best, applied while approaching the score for ‘The Raid’? What was the chicken & egg scenario and the process in terms of tracks for specific scenes?
Mike: At the start of a project like this, I try to zero-in on some ideas of what might work, and what might not. Think of it as a painter’s palette: you choose what colors to use, and what to avoid. It gives the piece a tone. In this case, I think some of the standout sounds–the breakbeats and the heavy synths and samples–were an early decision that helped define the score’s direction. And I decided to avoid guitars, which I thought made things feel brutish, if that makes sense. The distorted electro sounds set up the right aesthetic.

The Raid is a good example of minimalism, as it has a straight-forward narrative. Is that what initially drew you to the project, as there’s this certain minimalist approach?
Mike: I like the story. It’s not about a deep narrative, it’s about keeping things going so the action makes sense, and you feel like things have motivation. When the folks from Sony first reached out to me, rather than saying, “We want a Linkin Park score,” they cited other things–my remixes, my Fort Minor project–which all were really fun songs to make–the remixes were things that I did in my spare time. They were fun and easy to do. So I thought, “if that’s the type of thing they want, maybe this will be fun and easy.“

This is the first movie you’ve ever scored in its entirety. Are you happy with the result?
Mike: It was as fun as I had hoped. It was a fresh project, and the director (Gareth Evans) gave me a ton of creative space. I’m grateful for that. It made room for Joe (Trapanese) and I to make some bold decisions, like the dubstep stuff in one of the early SWAT team scenes, and the reoccurring keyboard arpeggio from “RAZORS.OUT.” which is the song at the end.

How was the creative process on this film different from your studio albums? Sometimes a movie score needs to take a backseat to the scenes that are on film. How were you able to accomplish this?
Mike: On a song, you are expressing your own emotions and telling your own story. You’re making something which is the center of focus for that experience. A score is mostly about supporting someone else’s story, and often about playing a supporting role. I tend to naturally make things that are very up-front and attention grabbing with Linkin Park, so I have to switch gears for a score.

Many composers start putting music together before the movie is finished. How challenging was it to re-score a film that was already completed?
Mike: It was actually not a challenge–it probably made things easier. Joe and I knew we could write to what was there, that the director wasn’t going to change the scene length under us.

A lot of the score reminded me a bit of ‘Session’ that appeared on ‘Meteora’. Did you pull any past musical sounds or techniques from your Linkin Park/Fort Minor productions to create the 50+ minutes of score?
Mike: I don’t usually set out to reference my own material, if it sounds like something else, it’s probably just because the same person is behind it!

Usually, action films such as Die Hard, XXX, or Rambo, aren’t particularly known for their score. Did you have any reservations having your first movie score being an action film?
Mike: That’s a great point. I did have a few reservations about it. But I think this film was asking for a score I could do pretty naturally, so I wouldn’t be spending a lot of time figuring out the right sound, and I could just do my thing and learn the workflow a little better.

What are some of your favorite Asian films?
Mike: I suppose if you want to go way back, I would say “Ran” or “Seven Samurai.” But if you consider it “Asian,” I also love the original “Karate Kid,” [laughs]!

What is it about iconic composers such as Hans Zimmer and John Williams that inspire you?
Mike: I just like what I like. I guess I like the boldness, and the many different themes that have become so iconic. I realize, of course, that there are big teams of people helping to create that work, and I can also appreciate the sheer amount of manpower that goes into some of the music they create together.

Lastly, can we expect to see more scores from you in the future? Is this something that you would enjoy doing throughout the years, granted the right projects come along?
Mike: Absolutely. I simply enjoy doing it, and I have every intention of stepping it up with each project. The Raid called for certain types of sounds, and I feel capable of taking on a variety of different styles, many more than would fit in this film. With The Raid behind me, I feel prepared to score something different next time–I would have a lot of fun taking on something more epic and emotionally complex with my next project.

We’ve been asked a lot of questions about the new $25 LPU11 Membership Tier and the guaranteed meet & greets we mentioned in the announcement email. Please read below for all of the answers to all (or most) of your questions.

Q: Do all members who purchased the $60 LPU11 Plus Membership get a guaranteed meet & greet?
A: No. The only members eligible for the guaranteed meet & greet are those LPU11 Annual members who purchased the $60 membership between November 15, 2011 and January 26, 2012. You are not eligible for the guaranteed meet & greet if you purchase the $60 LPU11 Plus Membership from here on out. As usual, all Annual LPU11 members ($25 and $60) are eligible to be selected for meet & greets using the raffle process.

Q: Since you’re guaranteeing meet & greets to those members, won’t they take up all of the meet & greet spots?
A: No. There will be plenty of room for other members at the meet & greets. Don’t worry!

Q: I am eligible for the guaranteed meet & greet. How do reserve my spot?
A: When you have tickets to a show, and ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE TICKETS TO A SHOW, send an email to lpuhq@lpunderground.com with the subject “LPU11 ANNUAL MEET & GREET: (CITY)”. Again, only send this email once you ACTUALLY have tickets to an upcoming show.

Q: Is there a certain amount of time I have to use my guaranteed meet & greet?
A: No! Your ONE guaranteed meet & greet is good until you use it. Whether it’s 4 months from now, or 4 years from now.

Q: Can I bring a friend/child/sibling/parent with me to the meet & greets?
A: No. You are not allowed to bring any guests with you to the meet & greets, no exceptions.

Q: If a show is cancelled, can I still use my guaranteed meet & greet in the future?
A: Yes. If anyone is selected for a meet & greet at a cancelled show, we will do our very best to make sure you are selected the next time the band is on tour.

• Rob had a great birthday.
• The new album is sounding great, no answers to when it will be done. But they are in a great flow, it’s definitely coming together.
• As far as to sound compared to A Thousand Suns: LP are always trying to do new things. Rob doesn’t like to describe the album too much, he said.
• Work is good, Rick was in the studio today, listening to some of the progress on the record. Since today is Monday they did have a band meeting. With feedback from Rick there’s lots being done, they also talked about LPU today, which is why he was asking for suggestions in the chat.
• LPU Summits are going to be continued, they are fun for the crew and themselves so they will definitely be continued.
• Highly likely chance they are returning to South America and Brazil (someone asked specifically for Brazil).
• Rob has a beard because of pure laziness.
• Rob doesn’t have twitter because he can’t even respond to all his emails, he’s keeping it simple.
• Drums in the new album: they’re expanding on the drum sounds in the new album, before the drums were electronic.
• The stuff they were listening to today, it sounds a lot like
• Phoenix was a guest at the LPU chat!
• Q: Does the new album sound aggressive? Phoenix: Yes.
• Phoenix is going to sing in the next chat with him.
• Chat went crazy when Rob asked how many people wanted to take the computer in the studio. Then Phoenix asked how many people wanted Rob to take his shirt off, again same response..chat went crazy. He did neither. He also later said he would never take off his shirt during the chat
• Mike and Chester are working on the vocals (during the chat), Joe and Brad left already. That’s probably why he didn’t bring the computer to the studio, he said, because Chester and Mike might get mad.
• They don’t know when the new single will come out but hopefully soon, fans should have new music very soon. They’re working on the album quickly.
• He asked the LPU members if they liked doing the drum solos, then he explained that he was forced by his bandmates so he’s not sure if there will be more. He’ll think about it.
• He was at the Roxy for the Julien-K show, and he mentioned that he remembers all the times when LP would play on sunset strip.
• He likes the idea of an LPU members only concert
• He didn’t get a whole lot of sleep last night, he was up playing drums.
• Rob has been playing piano every day lately, it helps him relax.
• His favorite drummer is Carter from Dave Matthews Band and drummer from Led Zeppelin
• They get lots of presents at the meet and greets, they do leave them in the room, but they get them later. So don’t think they just leave them there.
• Rob has 3 dogs, they’re all really big and keep him busy.
• More unannounced chats was requested and Adam and himself said it’ll happen.
• Rob is excited to see The Raid, he said that Mike is very talented and he’s excited for the score.
• When they’re writing something they don’t shoot for something they just go with what they’re feeling.
• They loved Moscow, it was an amazing show.
• They never do cover songs but if one comes along the way (at the right time) they might. (Note: wasn’t sure if I heard this one correctly)
• He loves to fly…to the concerts.
• Rob thinks that Chester is an amazing singer, sometimes when he sees Chester perform he feels lucky to be in the band with him
• Phoenix was filming Rob as the chat was happening, for Viddy.
• Rob asked the fans and Phoenix to get Mike to join the chat.
• Rob is going to give Phoenix a drum lesson, then asked if the fans wanted a drum lesson.
• Mike joined the chat and announced the new album title…check twitter for that, but they’re joking. Then he left to write a chorus, or so he said.
